Hi-Desert Water District: Strengthening Our Water System for Fire Protection

Investing in Infrastructure to Keep Our Community Safe

At the Hi-Desert Water District, we are committed to ensuring a reliable and efficient water system that meets both everyday needs and emergency demands. Over the past several years, we have made major upgrades to improve fire flow capabilities, enhance system resilience, and ensure our community has access to safe, dependable water.

Key Upgrades & Enhancements

✅ Replacing & Upsizing Water Lines – We have installed and upgraded 851,000 feet (over 160 miles) of water lines, improving flow capacity and reliability.

✅ Installing Fire Hydrants – Approximately 1,500 new fire hydrants have been added throughout our service area, providing better access to water for firefighting efforts.

✅ Increasing Water Storage Capacity – We have expanded our storage facilities to 12.2 million gallons of water, ensuring sufficient reserves in case of emergencies.

✅ Boosting Well Production – Our wells can now produce 6,600 gallons per minute, significantly improving water availability during high-demand situations.

✅ Enhancing Water Distribution – We have installed an 18-inch transmission main to move water more efficiently across the system, ensuring reliable supply where it’s needed most.

✅ Increasing Fire Flow Capacity – Two new booster stations have been installed to enhance fire flow and improve water pressure in critical areas.

✅ Emergency Power & Backup Systems – To maintain operations during power outages, we have three emergency generators and a portable water pump, ensuring continued water supply in critical situations.

Why These Upgrades Matter

These improvements are essential for enhancing fire protection, increasing system reliability, and ensuring emergency preparedness. By investing in stronger infrastructure, we are not only meeting fire flow requirements but also strengthening our ability to serve the community in times of crisis.

Looking Ahead

The Hi-Desert Water District remains committed to proactive planning and continuous system improvements. We will continue working closely with local fire departments, engineers, and community leaders to ensure our water system remains strong, resilient, and ready to support the needs of our community.

Hi-Desert Water District employees rallied together in December, raising $3,000 of their own contributions to donate and help make a difference in the community. The District's employee committee met in January and selected three local non-profit organizations to support this year - Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Desert, Joshua Tree No Kill Animal Shelter, and the High Desert Pregnancy Clinic.

These 501 (c)(3) organizations are dedicated to providing for the Morongo Basin and District staff was happy to meet with them to tour their facility, learn more about them, and present them each with a $1,000 check.
