🎄 Holiday Water-Saving Tips

1. In the Kitchen

Holiday cooking and cleaning can significantly increase indoor water use. These habits help cut waste:

  • Scrape, don’t rinse dishes before loading the dishwasher. Modern dishwashers clean effectively without pre-rinsing.
  • Run full loads only in both dishwashers and sinks.
  • Use a basin when hand-washing dishes instead of letting the faucet run.
  • Thaw foods in the refrigerator, not under running water.
  • Capture excess water (e.g., from rinsing vegetables) to water indoor plants.

2. For Holiday Guests

Extra people at home often means higher shower and laundry use, but these tips help keep it efficient:

  • Limit showers to 5 minutes—consider sharing a friendly reminder sign in guest bathrooms.
  • Space out showers to maintain hot water and reduce strain on water heaters.
  • Wash only full loads of laundry—holiday visitors generate extra linens, but efficient scheduling helps.
  • Place towels on hooks and encourage reusing them.

3. Decorating & Entertaining

Even holiday activities can be water-wise:

  • Choose drought-tolerant greenery for centerpieces (juniper, pine, manzanita, cedar).
  • Use LED lights instead of water-based decorations like misting humidifiers or indoor fountains.

4. Winter Lawn & Landscape Care

The holidays align with seasonal low water needs—perfect for saving:

  • Set your smart irrigation controller to “Rainy/Winter Mode” during cool months to avoid unnecessary outdoor watering.
  • Delay irrigating outdoor plants if rain is forecast or soil is still moist.
  • Water only once every 2–3 weeks in winter unless actively growing cool-season turf.
  • Check for run-off and leaks in outdoor systems.
  • Use mulch to retain moisture around trees and shrubs.

5. Preventing Holiday Plumbing Problems

Avoid leaks and wasted water caused by cold weather and increased home use:

  • Insulate outdoor pipes before freezing temperatures hit.
  • Only flush toilet paper—holiday wipes or packaging can clog lines and lead to costly waste.
  • Check toilets for silent leaks with a simple dye tablet test.

6. Smart Gift Ideas for Water Savers

Share this list to inspire conservation-minded giving:

Town of Yucca Valley's Measure Z

Measure Z is a half-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2016 and again in 2024 to be collected by the Town of Yucca Valley to help pay the annual payment of the Phase 1 Assessment District 2014-1.  Each year the money collected is transferred from the Town of Yucca Valley to the Hi-Desert Water District to pay toward the Phase 1 Assessment District 2014-1 loan, which reduces what is paid by property owners. The following is the amount for Tax Years 2025/2026 as reduced by the Measure Z sales tax revenue.

Preventing Holiday Plumbing Problems

  • Never dump grease or food waste down the drain. Grease cools, hardens, and causes costly blockages. Let it solidify and dispose of it in the trash.
  • There is no such thing as a “flushable” wipe. These products do not break down and can clog both home plumbing and sewer systems.
  • Avoid using the toilet as a trash can. Only human waste and small amounts of toilet paper should be flushed.
  • Do NOT flush:
    • Paper towels
    • Cleaning or baby wipes
    • Hair
    • Q-tips or cotton swabs
    • Diapers
    • Feminine products
